Combine a Historic Train Ride with a Cycling Tour
During your cycling getaway in Ardèche Hermitage, spend two days on a unique journey that combines a ride on a steam train with a greenway cycling route. The Gorges du Doux, the Eyrieux Valley, and the meanders of the Rhône: exceptional landscapes await you!

The Train of Ardèche – A Must-See Experience
Climb aboard the famous steam train: Le Mastrou, located just 4 km from the center of Tournon-sur-Rhône. Thanks to its Mallet locomotives, the train can accommodate up to 600 passengers. Once seated in the carriages, you're ready for a journey through the heart of the Gorges du Doux, heading toward Lamastre—one of the starting points of the Dolce Via greenway.
Along the way, you’ll discover mountain landscapes, the Doux River, and the authentic charm of the historic train. A timeless experience that delights both young and old alike!
The Greenway: Dolce Via
a gentle greenway created from a former railway line, linking the commune of La Voulte to Saint-Agrève in Ardèche. It offers 90 km of cycling paths overlooking the Eyrieux Valley. Nestled in the heart of unspoiled nature, the Dolce Via allows you to admire stunning viaducts during your cycling adventure.
To fully enjoy this route, we recommend using a mountain bike or hybrid bike. La Dolce via is well-equipped—with picnic tables and water points—making it perfect for well-deserved breaks. Former railway stops have also been converted into shelters, offering protection in case of bad weather.
Train of Ardèche + Dolce Via + ViaRhôna Getaway
Hear the whistle blow and catch sight of the beautiful plume of white steam? Then you’ve arrived at the Mastrou station! Once your bikes are safely loaded into the dedicated wagon, you’ll enjoy a 1 hour 40-minute journey through the wild and unforgettable landscapes of the Gorges du Doux. It’s the perfect start to your Train + Bike adventure! Upon arrival in Lamastre, simply follow the signs through the town center to easily connect with the Dolce Via. The first stretch has a bit of elevation gain, but no worries—this part is still suitable for families. After passing through the Nonières tunnel, your ride continues downhill along the old railway line. Along the way, take a well-deserved break at the riverside beach in Ollières-sur-Eyrieux. This 110-kilometer route can be completed over 2 to 3 days—make sure to book your overnight stays in a campsite or bed & breakfast. Once you reach La Voulte, connect to the ViaRhôna and follow the majestic Rhône River back toward Tournon-sur-Rhône, riding from one riverbank to the other.
