The 45th Parallel in the Drôme

Welcome to the 45th Parallel in the Drôme: a place where geography and history intertwine. Nestled in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the 45th parallel runs through this French department, creating a unique landmark for geography enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

The 45th Parallel, in the Heart of Sublime Nature

The 45th Parallel monument, located in Pont de l’Isère, was built in 1950 along the Route Nationale 7, thanks to the initiative of Pierre de Saint Prix (a former Prefect), and was inaugurated in the autumn of 1951. It is the work of André Deluol, a French sculptor born in Valence in 1909.

This piece symbolizes the imaginary line marking the exact halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. One side bears the inscription: “Dauphiné, here passes the 45th parallel of the northern hemisphere,” and the other reads: “Dauphiné, 45° north latitude, here begins the South.” This means that when you stand at this spot, you are equidistant from the warm climates of the South and the colder regions of the North. This location has a significant influence on the climate of the Drôme, creating favorable conditions for viticulture and agriculture.

When you visit this charming part of France, you'll have the chance to savor delicious apricots and flavorful peaches. You can also taste exceptional wines from the Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Hermitage appellations, and discover these world-renowned vineyards. The climate of the 45th parallel provides an ideal environment for these delicate products, which can only be found in our region.

In addition to offering irresistible flavors, the fruits of the Rhône Valley help shape breathtaking landscapes. Picture yourself strolling through orchards, accompanied by the sound of cicadas, or taking in stunning views of the winding King of Rivers. It’s the perfect setting for a holiday or a weekend getaway in the Drôme at the 45th parallel.

A Wealth of Activities Starting from the 45th Paralle

For cycling enthusiasts, the 45th parallel in Pont de l’Isère is an excellent starting point. You can set off on La Belle Via, a greenway that leads you directly to the ViaRhôna, running along the Rhône River, just 15 km from the town of Tournon-sur-Rhône in Ardèche.

 La Viarhôna   La Belle Via

This charming town, nestled along the river, is majestically recognizable thanks to its cliffside château  from the center of Tournon-sur-Rhône, beautiful walks through the Saint-Joseph hillside vineyards offer breathtaking viewpoints, such as the panoramic table at the chapel’s belvedere.

Continuing by bike along a greenway, just 4 km outside the town, you can hop aboard a steam train (Le Train de l’Ardèche) and travel through the Gorges du Doux at the rhythm of this one-of-a-kind journey! It's a timeless experience that can even take you to the starting point of the Dolce Via. If you choose to ride this greenway nestled in the heart of the Eyrieux Valley, you can then return via the ViaRhôna all the way back to the 45th parallel — completing the loop.
